More Blooks

I was doing a bit of clean up and came across a drawing pad that I hadn’t seen since 2008.  These are some Blooks (Loomis’ term) from Andrew Loomis‘ 1939 book Fun With A Pencil. The book was out of print for ages and it used to be that the only way you could get a copy of it was to find a bootleg pdf version online.  Loomis was an extremely successful illustrator and instructor in the first half of the twentieth century. His style ranged from the cartoony (like above) to the realistic.

Figure Drawing: Balance Studies

When I came up with the name of this blog I had intended the pain to be a metaphorical one. Unfortunately, I’ve discovered over the last few weeks that drawing on an easel set vertically has its drawbacks. Specifically, I’m experiencing pain in my drawing arm from drawing this way. So I’ve decided to take a little break from the Bargue plates.

In the interim I thought I would do some studies from a master of figure drawing – George Bridgman. The drawings above are a few examples of his balance studies that I’ve drawn from Bridgman’s Complete Guide to Drawing from Life.

Bargue Plate 1.6b.1

I really rushed the lay in on this one and now I’m paying for it. While the right side of the drawing is ok, the left side is completely out of whack with the original. I’ll have to spend a fair amount of time to fix all that before I post part 2 tomorrow.

This is one of those times when it’s actually painful to post what I’ve done.

Here’s the original series 1 plate 6b found in the Charles Bargue and Jean-Léon Gérôme Drawing Course. Like last time, I’ve printed out the original plate as close to actual size of 18″ x 24″ as I can.

Because there are two different feet on the original plate I’m going to break up the drawing into two different drawings. This is my completed lay in for the foot from the top half of the plate. Of course, as I look at it know it looks like I might have made the heel a little too wide on the right side. I’ll fix it before I move on to the next step.
